I brought 'tude to chanting

I brought 'tude to chanting

Apparently I am capable of dragging a full attitude to a room full of chanting monks.

Welcome to this week's Thought Gem — your reminder to pause, breathe, and choose your focus.

I had signed up to witness them months earlier with zero idea what I was actually getting into. Heard the word monks, said yes, moved on with my life. Then the actual day arrived and I had just lived through a week that would test anyone. Two cars in the shop. Trying to get my son to a new job on time. And then rain that turned the streets into something closer to a river, water pushing against the side of my car while I drove through it because there was nowhere left to turn around.

The car did not make it through the night. Towed the next morning. I sat in my funk for a long time after that, fully marinating in it.

And then I showed up to listen to the monks anyway, bad attitude fully intact.

An hour later, I felt like an entirely different person. Lighter. The whole flooded, towed, frustrating week felt like it belonged to someone else. I genuinely could not access that heaviness anymore even if I tried.

Side note. Can we talk about how time absolutely disappears when monks are chanting? I lost an entire hour and have no idea where it went.

What stayed with me afterward was this. How much of my own peace I had been handing over to things I never had any control over in the first place. The rain was never mine to manage. Neither was the car. And yet both of them had taken up so much space in my head all week.

Your invitation this week:
Just notice one thing that’s stealing your peace that was never yours to control.

We will go deeper into this on Wednesday.

Catch you Wednesday.
